Microsoft has announced that it is releasing a new FPS Boost mode for both Xbox Series X and S which will increase the frames for games running with backward compatibility. The new mode will make the gameplay of all existing games on the consoles better as it seriously enhances frame rates for older titles without having the developers release patches and updates for each title individually.
With the new feature in place, Microsoft claims that some games will nearly double in their frames, and in some instances, some backward compatible titles have even four-times the normal frame rates than they had when they were launched on their platform. The FPS Boost will gradually enhance its support for titles and at this point, Microsoft has revealed some of the first titles that will soon support FPS Boost mode. These titles include:
- Far Cry 4
- New Super Lucky’s Tale
- Sniper Elite 4
- UFC 4
- Watch Dogs 2
Out of these titles, the most boost in frames in New Super Lucky’s Tale which is now running on Xbox Series X|S with a whopping 120 FPS and UFC 4 gaining 60 FPS on the Xbox Series S specifically which Xbox Series X pushing even higher frames. All of the games that support the FPS Boost feature will also display a new icon when you are playing them. Pressing the Xbox key will have a new icon for FPS Boost which will identify when a game supporting this feature is being played on your console.
Paul Eng, senior program manager at Xbox details:
This is just the beginning. We will announce and release more titles featuring FPS Boost soon, as we roll out new menu icons and system settings in an upcoming system update.
If you do not know already, Microsoft is also planning a Dashboard upgrade for its next-gen consoles which is slated to arrive in Spring with additional compatibility options. You will be able to turn both Auto HDR and FPS Boost on and off to check how the game runs with and without the feature. Additional titles will be added to this list in the future and the second batch of titles will be much bigger than the first one.
