Bug Academy is a fun, physics-based game by Ultimate Games S.A. and Igrek Games that we have covered plenty on our website. You can check out our review of the PC version as well in which we reviewed the game in detail and really loved it. Bug Academy is now available on Nintendo Switch as well and this is our review of the Nintendo Switch version of the game. This is more of a comparative review rather than an in-depth review as we will be mainly going over the facts that how the Nintendo Switch version compares to the PC version of the game.
Beginning with a little introduction of the game, Bug Academy is essentially a physics-based, 2.5D arcade game where your main goal is to train a bunch of different insects. You play as flies, mosquitos, bees, and fireflies and pass a different number of classes each with unique tasks where you must pass different objectives using the special skills of the insects. Each insect class comes with their own unique skills such as the flies can lift heavy objects using their sheer numbers and fireflies can illuminate dark places with their lights.
Each level has three different stars and you get the stars based on your performance. Perform well and you will graduate every class with flying colors. Each level is designed for short but fun gaming sessions and you can easily complete these levels in less than 5 minutes. Depending on your play style, it may take you longer as well but if you are aiming for the Gold medals, the levels usually take around 3 minutes or less in most cases. This makes it an excellent choice of game sessions where you are on a strict timeline and do not have a lot of time for complex games.
The Nintendo Switch version of Bug Academy plays just like the Steam version in every way. It brings an additional feature of HD Rumble with it however apart from that, the game does not benefit in any way with the advanced motion controls that Nintendo Switch offers. The frames are pretty decent and there are no bugs or glitches in the game as well. Normally, in Nintendo Switch ports we see that the game is greatly degraded in nearly all aspects but it appears like it is not the case here with Bug Academy.
It brings the same visuals, same funky soundtrack, and same wacky mechanics exactly the same from the PC version of the game to Nintendo Switch. This is a very good port and if you do not have a PC, you can basically have the same Steam experience on a Nintendo Switch. One thing that I would have loved in the Nintendo Switch version of the game is multiplayer. PC players normally tend to play solo but Nintendo Switch is a console that is made for family gaming and multiplayer. People on Nintendo Switch prefer playing games that offer multiplayer so Bug Academy is going to lose some audience in this regard. The game would have been amazing in local co-op.
For a singleplayer game, Bug Academy offers quite a decent amount of content. Nintendo Switch is getting more and more PC ports now that is has greatly gained traction in the market and as we have detailed in some of our previous reviews, some of the ports have been plain horrendous where we mentioned that it is better not to port the game on Nintendo Switch if the developer has to rush it and release a glitchfest of an otherwise decent title. You do not have to worry about Bug Academy because Ultimate Games and Igrek Games have released a solid port for the Nintendo Switch players.
Final Verdict:
We gave the Steam version of Bug Academy a 9/10 because it is a real fun game that offers tons or replayability with its wacky physics and fun levels. Although the game can be completed in a fairly short amount of time, you can revisit each level any number of time and then aim for better medals. It is a quite fun game but no multiplayer on Nintendo Switch is a big lack of potential. Nintendo Switch excels are providing excellent multiplayer experience and Bug Academy would have been amazing with local co-op gameplay. On its own, Bug Academy is a great little game on Nintendo Switch and is perfect for little play sessions on the go or in your office during lunch breaks. You should definitely give this game a shot if you own a Nintendo Switch and are looking for a fun little game.
Final Verdict: 8.5/10
