Injustice 2: A Retrospective – Doing a Sequel Right

Injustice 2 Retrospective

In today’s retrospective, we go back and visit Injustice 2 which is the sequel to the original Injustice: Gods Among Us. When it comes to mastering the art of perfect arcade fighting games Netherrealm studios is a name that comes to mind and honestly, it has all the right too because back in the day Ed Boon and friends where acing every single thing with their one and only iconic Mortal Kombat series

In 2013 they made Injustice game and that was the biggest Justice done to the world of DC and gaming (see what I did there?) so this feature is will be a breakdown of why Injustice 2 was so amazing!

The DC Movie We Never Got (Story Mode)

Let’s be honest here before long before we had movies like Shazam, Aquaman the DC cinematic universe wasn’t doing well at all and the only thing of massive standards we had was the Nolan trilogy but luckily Injustice 2’s story mode is so well written and the on-screen depiction of heroes and villains is so perfect that it truly is the DC movie we never got.

The story picks off from where the first game ends which in short is Superman slowly losing his shit becoming a dictator. In the sequel, Superman is locked behind bars and is depleted of his powers while Batman and his team are helping to rebuild the world and civilization. The idea here again is a classic tale of Supes and Bats going at it but tensions rise as Brainiac jumps in to destroy the world.

Now forcefully putting their grievances aside the heroes must fight together to save the world but every on-screen encounter there is always tension and trouble lingering around because the intense hatred between our two main heroes doesn’t get cold and you have this thought in the back of your mind that Brainiac isn’t a distraction or threat forever. In a world of hurt, the heroes get the job done resulting in an excellent 3-hour long campaign!

Immortal Combat (Gameplay)

This is hands down the very greatest part of the Injustice 2 as the gameplay here is goes above and beyond of what we call super good or fantastic. The mechanics of landing an overhead attack to start up a juggle combo or holding the attack back for a strong blow that can either send your enemy crashing to a totally different arena or again help you start an air juggle combo.

There is an insane amount of depth in your character roster with so much of learning and tons of options to go with every character has an amazing blend of light, medium and heavy attacks with a buffet of special moves and the best thing that even the smallest of offense has signature style to them (depending on the character you chose)

As always the roster is packed with many great names with some returning like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Bane, and debuting names like Firestorm, Blue Beetle, Cheetah alongside many more, and then, of course, the crazy guests from DLC Packs push the game to an even higher level.

To keep it short Injustice 2 is the only game where Hell Boy can fight off Bane, Ninja Turtles can throw rounds with Robin, and Raiden can go one on with Superman oh my word the only game which grants you a god vs god match. A true battle of the heavyweights!

Create Your Own Hero (Customization)

Trust me all of us as kids have had the wish to customize our favorite comic book characters one way or the other and again Injustice 2 serves us as it has a fully fleshed out customization suite with options that go from visual appearances to the actual performance of your chosen fighter.

Defense, strength, ability, and health. The defense is how much you are resistant to the offense while the ability tab is for your superpowers. Strenght is all about the power of normal attacks and health determines how much you can take in a fight before either getting your right hand raised our hell seeing you lose on the screen.

Apart from this after every match, you are awarded gear pieces. Gear pieces can also be acquired from loot boxes here known as the mother boxes and each piece of gear can be either from common, rare, epic, or legendary with each class having different effects on your fighter.

Appearance-wise there is too much to chose from. You have headgear like different masks, headbands, glasses, and hairstyles then there are options to change up torose, arm pieces, and lower body gear. The best thing is how these different parts combine to make up a whole new suit and how they brought in different new suits like one’s form Justice League movie via the Multiverse which we are going to talk next.

A Never-Ending Game (Multiverse)

To cope up with the loot boxes there is an all-new Multiverse mode which is a never-ending single-player mode with challenges and modified fights that are time-based so if there’s a hot gear piece or reward up for grabs better beat the challenge fast as time to time these sets are changed.

These Multiverse challenges can go from a walk in the park to mid tear and from there straight up hellishly difficult but again the whole purpose of this mode is to get the players engaged.

DC’s Finest

All in Injustice 2 is not just an amazing core arcade fighter but an amazing video game nonetheless which is not just hardcore fans of the brand but every human who likes to play great tier games. With an amazing roster, crazy and surprising guest entries such as Hellboy and TMNT, a 3-hour strong intense story mode, and a never-ending Multiverse mode Injustice 2 is a phenomenal game that had set up a new standard in fighting game history.

If for some reason you missed it during its peak days you can still get the game now from digital stores for a very low price and can even get the game of the year edition with all the DLC packed in on the disc
