AMD Radeon VII was just revealed at CES 2019 and it will be released next month. This is not something revolutionary but the performance is higher than previous AMD Vega graphics cards and AMD CEO Lisa Su did mention that there are more cards coming out later this year.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was asked about the new product in a recent interview and he did not have polite words for the competition. The following is what he had to say about the AMD Radeon VII:
It’s underwhelming […] The performance is lousy and there’s nothing new. No ray tracing, no AI. It’s 7nm with HBM memory that barely keeps up with a 2080. And if we turn on DLSS we’ll crush it. And if we turn on ray tracing we’ll crush it.
All of that might indeed be true from what we have seen so far but AMD seems to be headed in the right direction with the card even though the pricing is pretty high. AMD cards are supposed to be cheaper when compared to Nvidia but that is not the case here. AMD CEO Lisa Su did have a response to this critique and the following is what she had to say regarding the matter:
What I would say is that we’re very excited about Radeon VII, and I would probably suggest that he hasn’t seen it yet.
The AMD Radeon VII might not support ray tracing and other RTX features but you need to ask yourself, are those features all that important? Keep in mind that not many games at this time support DXR. More titles might be added to the list in the future but as of right now, RTX is just a major hit on performance for a few reflections and shadows that you aren’t even going to look at in competitive titles.
