Indie developer Grumpyface Studios has unveiled Castle Doombad 2: Muahaha! and Castle Doombad Classic. These titles have emerged from what was initially planned as a remake of the original Castle Doombad, evolving significantly during production. Apart from these two releases, a free-to-play mobile version of this iconic release is also in the pipeline.
Castle Doombad is a beloved Tower Defense puzzler series that lets you step into the devious shoes of villain Dr. Lord Evilstein. You must strategically defend their castle using treacherous traps and monstrous minions against invading heroes aiming to rescue the captured princess. The original Castle Doombad, developed by Grumpyface and published by Adult Swim Games, was released on iOS and Android in 2014. However, it was delisted after the publisher’s closure. Fortunately, Grumpyface acquired the full intellectual property rights, allowing them to breathe new life into the series.

Chris Graham, President and Creative Director of Grumpyface, shared insights into the new versions: “Despite developing a small cult following, the original Castle Doombad can no longer be purchased or downloaded anywhere. As part of the unfortunate closure of our old publisher, Adult Swim Games, it essentially became a ‘lost game’. Naturally, our first instinct was to get it back out into the world as a remake. As we began making improvements and modernizing our decade-old game, not only did we fall back in love with it, but we also realized our changes and new ideas were evolving things to the point where it no longer felt like a remake. To our surprise, we gradually realized we were working on a sequel the whole time. For years we’ve wanted to do more with this old game of ours that we loved – and now we finally have that opportunity to go BIGGER and BADDER!”
Castle Doombad 2: Muahaha! promises new content, a surprising gameplay direction, 2-player Co-Op Mode, and a brand new story. While the release date is yet to be announced, the game is slated for Nintendo Switch and Steam for both PC and Mac. You can already add the Steam version to your wishlist.
Chris Graham also announced Castle Doombad Classic: “Now that we’ve pivoted from the Castle Doombad Remake to a full sequel that reimagines the original, we want to ensure fans of the old game will still have a way to play the Doombad they remember. However, we still took the opportunity to add in some improvements and new content updates to the original game, including some ideas we had way back in 2014 that never made it into the original and were left on the cutting room floor.”
Castle Doombad Classic is set for release this year on Nintendo Switch and Steam for both PC and Mac. Like its successor, the Classic version on Steam has its own wishlist page. Additionally, Grumpyface has partnered with mobile game publisher Yodo1 to release Castle Doombad Classic as a special free-to-play mobile version called Castle Doombad: Free to Slay, available on iOS and Android.
